Case
Study: Dallas 2012
OVERVIEW:
In 1997, the City of Arlington submitted an eleventh-hour bid
to bring the 2012 Olympics to Arlington.
To succeed, Arlington's mayor tells the media that the Olympic
effort must become a North Texas regional effort ... with Dallas
taking the lead.

STRATEGIES
AND CHALLENGES: A summer Olympics? In Dallas? Are you
kidding me?
No.
As one of eight U.S. cities that bid to host the 2012 games, Dallas
soon realized that the Olympics were about more than just bringing
thousands of athletes to North Texas.
The Olympics would require facilities and infrastructure. A regional
bid would necessitate regional cooperation between North Texas
cities and their elected leaders.
And then there would be the fundraising and volunteers
to pull it all off, not to mention the showmanship and hospitality
to win the international bid committee's attention in the first
place.
With showmanship and civic buy-in as hallmarks, orchestrating
the U.S. Olympic Committee's site visit fell to The Reeds PRC.
RESULTS: The Reeds recruited the grassroots volunteers,
raised the funds, and organized a series of 2012 events designed
to show off the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Chief among the events
was a celebration at Dallas' 277-acre Fair Park. With a chorus
of hundreds of children, celebrities, fireworks and a dazzling
display of the city's Art Deco landmark, Olympics organizers received
the full Dallas experience.
Unfortunately, the U.S. Olympic Committee went on to recommend
New York City as the U.S. candidate for the games ... and they
lost out in the final selection process to London. However, the
regional effort coalesced communities that had never before worked
together and, while doing so, brought North Texas' best assets
to broader public attention.
